Consciousness: A Quantum Phenomenon

A growing body of evidence in the fields of neuroscience and psychology strongly indicates that “consciousness” is an inherently quantum-mechanical phenomenon.

Despite stunning advances in brain and cognitive science, which have served to elucidate certain mental phenomena such as memory and perception, other mental phenomena are as obscure today as they were 100 years ago, at the onset of modern psychology. These classically unaccountable mental phenomena include the phenomenon of consciousness itself: the essential subjectivity of the mind.

Despite concerted efforts, neuroscientists have failed to locate a “magical bundle of nerves within the brain” that can account for the origin of consciousness. This failure, combined with other theoretical and experimental arguments, has led many leading researchers to conclude that consciousness is not, entirely, an emergent property of the brain, but a more basic phenomenon. Indeed, there is growing evidence to suggest that consciousness has its roots deep within the DNA and the unique intra- and extra-cellular environment created by the DNA. DNA, in turn, is a biological macromolecule, whose properties are governed by quantum mechanics.

Erwin Schrödinger was among the first to point out that many of the unique characteristics of living organisms are consequences of the microscopic origins of life and its quantum mechanical roots within the DNA—among these characteristics, the phenomenon of consciousness. Many of the remarkable properties of living systems that are enigmatic to classical physics are inherent properties of quantum mechanics. The stability of living systems—i.e., the ability to preserve the genome in a high-entropy environment—ultimately derives from the quantum-mechanical stability of DNA as a molecule. The ability of living organisms to create and preserve order in their environment, in apparent contradiction to the second law of thermodynamics, is also an inherently quantum-mechanical property.

Similarly, many of the essential characteristics of consciousness—its intrinsic liveliness, intelligence, and self-awareness—are foreign to the inert world of classical mechanics, but are natural qualities at quantum mechanical scales.

The DNA macromolecule serves as a junction point between the non-material world of quantum mechanics and the material structure of the human physiology. The DNA thus acts as a conduit through which essentially quantum-mechanical properties of consciousness enter the human physiology and pervade our human experience.

For this purpose, the DNA creates specific structures in its cellular environment, known as microtubules, that amplify and extend certain quantum-mechanical properties of consciousness and impart these behaviors to the cell as a whole. In more sophisticated multi-celled organisms, these elements of consciousness become further amplified, externalized, and imparted to the entire organism through the creation of a nervous system, entailing specialized nerve cells that integrate and coordinate the conscious activity of all the individual living cells.

Thus it is increasingly understood that consciousness—the essential subjectivity of the mind—is not ultimately created by the macroscopic machinery of the brain, but is an inherently quantum-mechanical phenomenon, with its ultimate origin deep within the DNA.

The Unified Field

Quantum theory itself has evolved considerably since its inception in the 1920s. Early quantum mechanics was incompatible with Einstein’s special relativity, and thus inapplicable to the atomic nucleus and other relativistic systems. Quantum mechanics thus gradually gave way to relativistic quantum field theory (QFT), a highly successful quantum theory of the elementary particles and forces—excluding gravity. Ultimately, the need to incorporate gravity recently led physicists to abandon this quantum field theory of elementary particles in favor of superstring theory—a quantum theory of vibrating, one-dimensional strings.

Unified field theories based on the superstring provide the first fully consistent theories of all the elementary particles and forces, including gravity. These theories locate a single, universal “unified field” at the basis of all forms and phenomena in nature. Millions of times smaller and more powerful than the nuclear field, the unified field is the fountainhead of all the laws of nature—the ultimate source of all order displayed throughout the universe.

Many important scientific observations that were merely implicit in the framework of early quantum mechanics have become explicit in the more complete and successful framework of the superstring. In particular, the fundamental, quantum-mechanical origin of consciousness, merely suspected on the basis of early quantum mechanics, is obvious in the context of the superstring.

Indeed, careful examination reveals that the unified field is essentially a field of consciousness—as much as it is the foundation of matter. The defining characteristics of consciousness employed by most psychologists and neuroscientists—intelligence, dynamism, and self-awareness (or self-interaction)—are essential qualities of the unified field.

Thus a thorough understanding of consciousness, its ultimate origin and its fundamental properties, necessarily entails quantum mechanics and ultimately unified quantum field theory. In our theoretical discussion of the mechanics of the Invincible Defense Technology, and the principles of consciousness that underlie this Technology, we will employ relevant mechanisms from both early quantum mechanics and from unified quantum field theories based on the superstring. (The former mechanisms, where applicable, afford a graphic and broadly accessible theoretical context.)

QUESTION: Why aren’t the quantum-physical foundations of consciousness generally known or broadly acknowledged by scientists?

ANSWER: Because very few neuroscientists are schooled in unified quantum field theory. And conversely, very few physicists contributing actively to the forefront of unified field theory are deeply familiar with consciousness. The overlap between these disciplines has been virtually non-existent, to the detriment of both fields. In particular, the material paradigm in which most physicists operate virtually precludes any possibility that consciousness could occupy a fundamental role in nature, or that it is anything but the product of electrical-chemical events in the brain.

As a consequence, many scientists have been reluctant to even examine the published empirical findings on the Invincible Defense Technology. But it must be emphasized that this material view of consciousness has no basis in empirical fact and should not be formally associated with science. The scientific method depends on a careful and open-minded examination of empirical facts. Fortunately, a growing number of scientists, including many of the nation’s top psychologists and neuroscientists, have now examined the published evidence and are convinced of the efficacy of the Invincible Defense Technology. Invincible Defense Technology: A Technology of the Unified Field

As previously stated, conventional technologies of defense are based on obsolete science that has been largely outdated by the recent discovery of unified field theories. These conventional technologies are based on the application of specific, isolated laws of nature functioning at the chemical, biological, and nuclear levels.

The new Invincible Defense Technology is based on the discovery of the unified field—a completely holistic level of natural law that is vastly more fundamental and powerful than even the nuclear force.

As a consequence, there are three crucial features of this approach:

1. It can easily overpower—and effectively disarm—conventional technologies of offense based on the chemical, biological, or nuclear levels.

Its effects are broadly life-supporting and free from unanticipated negative side-effects, because it is based on the application of a completely holistic level of natural law—the unified field—the same organizing intelligence that upholds the entire universe.

Indeed, the unified field constitutes a very fundamental physical field of peace. It is a field in which sharply opposing tendencies in nature, termed bosons and fermions, exist together in a state of perfect balance and unity—a property called supersymmetry. When this field is stimulated in the collective consciousness of society through the mechanism of the Invincible Defense Technology, a powerful, measurable physical influence of peace gets generated, defusing acute social stress and the ethnic and religious tension that fuel fanatical acts of terrorism.

While the unified field lies beyond the range of the mightiest particle accelerators, it is not beyond the range of human comprehension or human application. Its accessibility to the human mind is amply demonstrated by today’s highly successful unified quantum field theories and comparable theoretical developments in the field of mathematics, chemistry, and other disciplines.

Indeed, we will see that, even without advanced education, human awareness can easily access—and harness—this field, using specialized technologies of consciousness.

Detailed Mechanics of the Invincible Defense Technology

During the past few decades, extensive research in the field of neuroscience has confirmed that human awareness can be trained to access the unified field. Specifically, modern physiological science has discovered a unique fourth state of consciousness—subjectively and physiologically distinct from waking, dreaming, and sleeping. In this hypo-metabolic, physiological state, the body is deeply rested (several times deeper than sleep) while the awareness is alert and subjectively “unbounded.”

A constellation of physiological and electrophysiological changes are associated with this experience of inner wakefulness, including high alpha power and global EEG coherence. More than 600 scientific studies, conducted at over 200 independent universities and research institutes in 35 countries and published in more than 100 scientific and scholarly journals, confirm a wide range of physiological, psychological, and sociological benefits resulting from this fundamental experience.

The technologies of consciousness employed to gain access to this hypo-metabolic physiological state are at once ancient and ultra-modern: Ancient because they derive from the oldest known record of human experience, the Vedic tradition of India; ultra-modern because they have recently become the subject of intensive scientific research.

For example, the National Institutes of Health have invested millions of dollars in the research and application of this fourth state of consciousness for stroke, hypertension, heart disease, and other stress-related illness. The Veterans Administration hospitals reimburse for instruction in these consciousness technologies, most notably Transcendental Meditation, a non-religious practice that is the most widely researched and broadly prescribed method for experiencing this state.

This fourth state of consciousness results from the systematic de-excitation of consciousness, and simultaneous expansion of the awareness. These are indicated, respectively, by the onset of high alpha power and “global EEG coherence,” in which distant regions of the brain become profoundly synchronous. Interestingly, these features are linked to increased intelligence, creativity, memory, alertness, reaction time, psychological stability, and emotional maturity. As a consequence, these practices have been advocated as a powerful educational and developmental technology.

In this state of maximally expanded awareness, the individual gains access to the unified field, which is experienced subjectively as a single, universal field of intelligence at the basis of mind and matter. The experience of this underlying field of individual and collective consciousness creates an impulse within this field that has a measurable beneficial effect upon the surrounding society.

Moreover, groups of individuals in close physical proximity, collectively experiencing and enlivening this field, have a much larger societal influence, causing a measurable increase in EEG coherence in the surrounding population and highly statistically significant drops in crime, terrorism, warfare, and other indicators of societal stress and incoherence. These remarkable but easily replicable societal effects have been confirmed in more than 50 scientific studies and 19 papers published in leading, peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Based on the above theoretical framework, these results are not entirely surprising. They can be seen as an inevitable consequence of the previous description of the fundamental, quantum-mechanical roots of consciousness. If consciousness is, fundamentally, the unified field (or more generally if consciousness is linked to any Bose field), then one would expect that:

1. The de-excitation of consciousness would be associated with an expansion of individual awareness.
2. There would be predictable societal consequences of collective experience of the unified field.

These points are most graphically demonstrated by the recent, 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to Professors Cornell, Ketterle, and Wieman. Their work graphically demonstrates how classically isolated systems (2000 separate atoms) coalesce to form a single, macroscopic quantum fluid. Using state-of-the-art laser techniques, individual Rubidium atoms (which are bosons) were supercooled. As a consequence of the reciprocal relation between momentum and wavelength (the “uncertainty principle”), their atomic wavelengths expanded. Once the individual wave functions overlapped, they spontaneously transitioned into the same quantum state (a natural predisposition of Bose particles). With all the individual wave functions identical, these wave functions behaved as one global wave function known as a Bose-Einstein condensate. In this macroscopic quantum-coherent state, the individual atoms lose their individual identities, creating a single quantum fluid with extraordinary properties.

While these experiments were performed with Rubidium atoms, they illustrate universal behavior of Bose particles or fields. Analogous to points 1 and 2 above:

1. De-excitation (achieved by supercooling, in the atomic example) results in expansion of the wave function, leading to the appearance of quantum-mechanical wave behavior in what had previously been viewed as classical, localized systems (individual Rubidium atoms in the Nobel experiments and individual participants in the Invincible Defense Technology).
2. Collective coherent behavior emerges. Once the wave functions overlap, there is an increased statistical tendency for the Bose fields to occupy the same quantum states. This results in a Bose-Einstein condensate in which the individuals temporarily lose their individual identities and coalesce to form a single macroscopic quantum fluid. Systems (atoms) that had been extremely localized become essentially unbounded.

The analogous anticipated practical societal impact of a group of individuals collectively experiencing the fourth state of consciousness, in which consciousness identifies with the unified field, is an increased tendency for individuals in the surrounding social environment to similarly exhibit increased alpha power and global EEG coherence, as well as the expanded comprehension and universally life-supporting action associated with such increased orderliness of brain functioning. In addition, one would expect society as a whole to display greatly enhanced coherence, with marked reductions in terrorism, crime, warfare, and other manifestations of social stress and societal incoherence.

Another critical feature that can be derived from this example is that the intensity, or power, generated by the group grows as the square of the number of participants. This outcome is perhaps most graphically seen in the example of laser light—another example of macroscopic quantum-coherent behavior. The remarkable power of a laser, which is due to its intense focus, results from the fact that this power grows as the square of the number of atoms contributing coherent photons to the beam.

This N² power of coherence-creating groups is one of the most striking features of the many published studies on the Invincible Defense Technology. It is this feature that makes this approach a highly practical technology of defense. This N² dependence means that relatively small numbers of experts in the requisite technologies of consciousness are needed to precipitate a global effect—an effect large enough to cause a dramatic reduction in terrorism on a global scale.

In summary, the Invincible Defense Technology constitutes the first technological application of the unified field—a level of nature’s functioning that is millions of time more fundamental and powerful than the nuclear force, yet purely life-supporting in its effects.

This technology is far more basic than conventional defense technologies, which do not address the underlying cause of terrorism—mounting tensions among rival factions in critical hotspots throughout the world.
